STEP TWO: CHARACTERISTICS and WRITERS' ADVICE
Due: Jan. 5
A. Research the characteristics of your genre. Basically, what elements almost always show up in this kind of writing? What will a reader see that will make them identify the genre? By the end of the period, compose a list of FIVE characteristics of this kind of writing. Explain each of your findings, and cite your sources. (10 pts)
B. Research advice writers give on how to write in this genre. By the end of the period, compose a list of 5 pieces of the BEST advice you found from people who write in this genre. (5 pts)

STEP THREE: RESEARCH AUTHORS AND SAMPLE WRITINGS
Due: Jan. 7
A. Compile a half page of information on ONE author, listing information about their individual style, what they're known for, how they develop the elemens of this type of writing, and anything special they say about their own writing.
Then, attach a sample of that author's writing, noting anything in the passsage you think is interesting or why it is a good example of the genre.
Include the citation of your sources. (15 pts)
B. Repeat "A" but with your second author and a second excerpt. (15 pts)

C. Lastly, look for the elements of the genre within your author's writing samples. That means, some of the characteristics you wrote down in Step Two should show up somehow in your author's excerpts in Step Three. Underline 3 examples in each excerpt and label (or explain) which characteristics they are examples of in the margin. Now, you can turn in your work. (10 pts)
STEP FOUR: PRODUCT
Due: Jan. 14
SO, you've done some great research on your genre! Now it's time to decide if you will combine your research with a partner to design and present a PowerPoint that teaches the class A L L about writing in a certain genre -- OR -- if you will write an original piece in the genre you've researched, purposely aiming to develop three elements on which you will decide.
